About the Northeast Biomanufacturing Center & Collaborative (NBC2)
Building a Sustainable Infrastructure for Biomanufacturing Jobs and Education
The Northeast Biomanufacturing Center and Collaborative is a National Science Foundation - Advanced Technological Education Center specified by NSF Award #0501953. It is comprised of the following six northeast region community college hubs and biotechnology directors: New Hampshire Community Technical College - Sonia Wallman, Minuteman Technical High School - Mary Jane Kurtz, Community College of Rhode Island - Josephine Pino, Finger Lakes Community College - James Hewlett, Montgomery County Community College - Linda Rehfuss, and Community College of Baltimore County - Tom Burkett.
NBC2 Mission
The goal of the Northeast Biomanufacturing Center and Collaborative is to form a self-sustaining regional alliance of community colleges working in collaboration with industry, education, professional associations and government to prepare a 21st century technical workforce for the Biopharmaceutical Biomanufacturing sector of the Biotechnology industry.
To achieve the overall goal of the project the project will:
Establish Sustainable Learning Communities around Community College Hubs
Develop Biomanufacturing Curricula and Instructional Materials
Provide Professional Development Opportunities in Biomanufacturing for Faculty
Disseminate Biomanufacturing Education and Training and Workforce Information
Build Biomanufacturing Infrastructure Capacity and Self-Sufficiency
The intellectual merits of the proposed NBC2 include: 1) creation of learning communities to support biopharmaceutical manufacturing companies need for biomanufacturing technicians and the student.s need for a biomanufacturing career pathway from high school to community college to universities; 2) development of curricula and hands-on SOPs to support biomanufacturing education and training for the region and nation; and 3) data from the Northeast region on the number of students entering biotechnology programs that offer education and training in biomanufacturing and that go on to work for biopharmaceutical manufacturers.
The broader impacts of the proposal include 1) the use of case studies on the nature of collaborative efforts in the Region to support biomanufacturing jobs and biomanufacturing education and training at different levels; 2) on-time, on-demand, on-line biomanufacturing curricula and instructional materials (SOPs) for use regionally, nationally and globally; 3) the
development of a dynamic website at www.biomanufacturing.org and linked to Bio-Link's website at www.bio-link.org that focuses on biomanufacturing in the Northeast, that will publish the products of the NBC2 and allow for vigorous public communication amongst Hub directors over a web log (blog) located on the website on the world-wide web; and 4) benefits to society by educating and training technicians to manufacture a continuous pipeline of biopharmaceuticals to fight disease.
