The Northeast Biomanufacturing Collaborative developed the Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Industry Skill Standards. Funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) project grant, the standards for ten biomanufacturing jobs were developed and validated by biomanufacturing company personnel throughout the 12 state (and District of Columbia) Northeast Region and published January 31st, 2004.

To develop the Biomanufacturing Standards of Apprenticeship, the Director of the Northeast Biomanufacturing Collaborative worked with the document cited above and the Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship and Training in the state of New Hampshire, in Region 1 in Boston, MA and at the National Office in Washington, D.C. A Certificate of Registration for the occupations of Bio-Manufacturing Technician (Upstream and Downstream) signed by Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao and Administrator of Apprenticeship Training, Anthony Swoope, was presented to the Northeast Biomanufacturing Collaborative at the first Advisory Board Meeting of the Northeast Biomanufacturing Center and Collaborative (NBC2)* on September 26, 2005 at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, NY. The Regional Standards of Apprenticeship for Biomanufacturing Jobs were approved on May 8, 2006.

The documents, below, lay out the Standards of Apprenticeship for the occupations of Biomanufacturing Technician Upstream and Biomanufacturing Technician Downstream.

*The NBC2 is a regional biomanufacturing center funded by the NSF ATE program. The NBC2 will be used as a vehicle to regionalize the DOL Biomanufacturing Apprenticeship program throughout the Northeast.
