NBC2 Education Partners
This program, founded in Fall 2005 is intended for students interested in pursuing either employment or an advanced degree in the rapidly growing field of biotechnology. Students completing this degree will have acquired necessary laboratory skills and theoretical background for either employment or transfer to other four-year colleges or universities like the University of Southern Maine. Career and research opportunities include, but are not limited to, animal sciences, agrigenetics, immunogenetics, pharmaceutics, biomedical technologies, forensics, plus marine and environmental science.
A recent University of Maine report funded by the Maine Technology Institute (see Portland Press Herald, February 2, 2003) states that "biotechnology is booming in [Maine], with the industry generating nearly $432 million in sales and employing 3,690 people in 2002." This report continues to add that "the industry's secondary economic impact contributed $685 million and supported 7,135 additional jobs." |

The New Hampshire Biotechnology Education and Training (NH BET) Center was established at NHCTC in 1994. Three Biotechnology programs are offered. Common to the Biotechnology programs are two hands-on cornerstone courses, Discovery Research and Biomanufacturing. These are offered in a state-of-the-industry facility where students learn the skills, knowledge and attributes of the biotech industry. Most graduates are found at Biomanufacturing companies with jobs in Cell Culture, Purification, Quality Control Biochemistry, Quality Control Microbiology, Quality Assurance, Validation, and Process Development. The A.S. degree program is transferable to 4 year colleges. The Center also houses the Northeast Region of Bio-Link, the Center of Expertise in Biomanufacturing and the Northeast Biomanufacturing Center and Collaborative. The Center trains teachers and faculty in hands-on Biotechnology and incumbent workers through the NortheastBiomanufacturing Institute. Thirty 2005-2006 graduates are working in biomanufacturing at the following companies: Lonza, Wyeth, Amgen (RI and CA), GlycoFi (Merck), Milllipore, BioServe (CA), BiogenIdec, and Perkin Elmer Life Science.

Biotechnology is a college preparatory program designed for students wanting to pursue a career in the medical field as a medical doctor, researcher, geneticist, pathologist, biochemist or forensic scientist among others. This program meets the biology and health requirements for high school graduation and also offers advanced science credits. Honors or college prep credits can be contracted for. The course is approved for 15 college credits through Project Running Start. Microbiology and Biology college credits can be earned. Students who successfully complete Biotechnology I may be eligible for Biotechnology II and III (internship) on a competitive basis, as well as, Health Sciences I and Animal & Plant Science L A great deal of independence and a preparedness for college level work is required. Successful completion of Chemistry is recommended. Prerequisites: Freshman Science (B or better) and Algebra I (or taken concurrently).

Biotechnology, Bachelor of Science
This major focuses on biology at the molecular level and reflects the importance of science at the biology/chemistry interface. Independent laboratory work is emphasized and the senior research project is mandatory. The program prepares students for work in the field of biotechnology as well as industries such as chemical companies, pharmaceutical companies, and environmental firms. This major also provide students with the core courses required for admission to professional and graduate schools.

Established in 2005, the BCC Center Biotechnology Education funded in part by the BCC Foundation and Rodgers Family Foundation. Beginning in Fall 2006, a certificate program (29 credits) running from(from September -August ) is offered with curriculum that includes Fundamentals of Biological Sciences, Introduction to Biotechnology Cell Biology, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry of Nucleic Acids, Microbiology, and Statistics plus hands-on laboratory skills training. In addition, BCC is also offering an Associate Degree in Bio-manufacturing Technology as an engineering option for graduates who can enter the workforce as bio-manufacturing, bioprocess or pharmaceutical manufacturing technicians.
Two new programs are in development: An associate degree program in Biotechnology/Biomedical Technology and a certificate program in Bioinformatics (29 credits) to be offered in Fall 2007. All programs are designed to facilitate career as a well as higher education (4 year colleges and Universities) transfer opportunities for our graduating students.

BHCC has launched a new two year Associate Degree in Biological Science with two concentrations: a biology transfer option that prepares students for transfer to four-year universities with junior status as biology majors and a biotechnology option that prepares students for direct employment in entry-level research/lab assistant positions available in private industries, academic research institutions, and hospitals.
Transfer students will complete 61 - 64 credits including four biology core courses: General Biology I/lab, General Biology II/lab, Cell Biology/lab and Genetics/lab. A further goal is to provide students with the technical course-work and laboratory experience. Articulation agreements are already in place with the UMASS system and more are underway.
The biotechnology option will provide students with a rigorous academic background as well as industry specific lab skills in molecular biology, genetics, protein chemistry and cell biology. Students will complete 61 - 64 credits including six biology core courses: General Biology I/lab, General Biology II/lab, Cell Biology/lab, Genetics/lab, Biotechnology/lab and Seminar in Biotechnology/lab. The program will also reinforce general industry specific skills such as communication, biology and lab specific computer skills and teamwork. Students will become proficient in experimental design and set up, safety regulations, routine and maintenance work and use of lab kits. Students will participate in internships and will be exposed to career opportunities, work concepts and practices of the biotech industry through field trips and presentations by guest speakers.
The comprehensive nature and methodologies offered will prepare highly skilled students with the potential for professional growth and the possibility of merit bonus, promotion and continuing education.

The MBCC Biotechnology Programs offers undergraduate science programs specifically for nontraditional students. The Biotech program started in 1993; Marine Biotech in 1995; and the Forensic DNA Science program started in 1995. The training emphasis is in the areas of recombinant DNA technology, protein chemistry, cell culture and immunology, and chromatography (with a special emphasis on High Performance Liquid Chromatography). Teaching technologies also include molecular biology and genetic engineering. Graduates, including 12 in 2006, are eligible for entry-level technical positions in a wide range of disciplines including biomanufacturing. Approximately 54 percent of Biotech students enter industry and the program's placement rate is 100 percent. Companies hiring graduates include SBH Sciences; Genzyme; Organogenesis, and Mattech. The Biotechnology Program prepares students for the pursuit of advanced degrees in the sciences and holds articulation agreements with a number of prestigious baccalaureate institutions nationwide.

With the decision by the biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb to locate a $1.1 billion manufacturing facility at the former Fort Devens site, Mount Wachusett Community College has responded and gained the authority to offer an Associate in Science degree with emphasis on biomanufacturing, including a certificate program. MWCC has built a state of the art biomanufacturing training center at the Devens campus. Biotechnology and biomanufacturing classes will be held at this facility beginning in the Fall of 2008. Building on the NBC2 Global Biomanufacturing Curriculum the experiential courses will use bacteria, mammalian and yeast cells to produce human proteins using tools and standard manufacturing operating procedures of biomanufacturing. Students in the biotechnology degree or certificate will also complete a 260 hour practicum experience assigned to a mentor in a regional biomanufacturing facility (such as BMS) that will assure acquisition of skills required for jobs in cell culture, purification, quality control, validation and process development.

Established in 1991, the two year associate degree program provides basic understanding of biotechnology and laboratory techniques. Developed with assistance from area biotechnology firms, students acquire skills that can be applied in a wide variety of biotechnology industries, from manufacturing to research. With hands-on training using state of the art instrumentation in spectroscopy, protein determination and separation techniques such as filtration, centrifugation, chromatography, and electrophoresis, the program prepares students for employment. Potential entry-level positions include Manufacturing Technician and Chemistry QC technician. With roughly 25 students enrolled, about 5 complete the program annually. A total of 40 graduates are estimated to be working in biomanufacturing jobs today, including at Wyeth in Andover and Genzyme in Boston.

Established in 1993, Quinsigamond offers a 12-month, 25-credit Biotechnology Certificate Program that prepares students for work in research and biomanufacturing, with an option for a transferable Associate in Arts degree in General Studies with a Biotechnology concentration. Courses include Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, plus industry intern/externships. With an average of 6 to 12 graduates annually, all of them gain employment quickly in biomanufacturing, research, medical, and pharmaceutical laboratories. The biggest employer is Abbott (which also hosts and team teaches the college's Techniques course). Other companies employing graduates are Genzyme, Astra Zenica, Athena Diagnostics and Charles River Laboratories.

Established in 1996. The Biotechnology Program at STCC offers an Associate Degree in Biotechnology. The Biotechnology Manufacturing Certificate of Completion is a fast track program that enables a student to acquire current biotechnology skills in one year. This certificate program is specifically designed for students who wish to obtain the skills and knowledge necessary for direct employment in biomanufacturing. There are four options within the certificate program, focusing on skills required for different jobs in biomanufacturing. The certificate consists of 27 to 29 credits with a common core of courses including biology, chemistry, and math, and several courses specific to the particular option chosen. These courses prepare the student by developing skills in laboratory calculations, sterile technique, proper processing of materials, and quality control procedures. After completion of this certificate, a student can qualify for employment as a biomanufacturing technician, quality control technician, or facilities operator. With two graduates so far, Springfield has a 100 percent placement rate in biomanufacturing. Graduates are working at Microtest Laboratories in Agawam and New England Peptide in Gardner, Mass.

The Biomedical Laboratory and Clinical Sciences (BLCS) program started in 1987 at Boston University to provide a Bachelor of Science degree and advanced certificates, including one in Biotechnology. The nine month certificate program has been successful in producing qualified individuals for entry-level jobs in Boston area biomanufacturing companies. The Undergraduate Certificate in Biotechnology is designed for professionals requiring additional skills and knowledge. Students must complete a minimum of 16 credits. The BLCS offers evening and Saturday classes to accommodate working adults, plus there are on-line options. Courses include Current Good Manufacturing Practices and Quality Assurance; Techniques in Molecular Biology; Proteomics; Human Genetics; and Cell Culture Techniques. During any one semester about 250 students will take biotech courses, with about 35 matriculated students and 50 registered for certificates.
About 35 percent are employed in biomanufacturing jobs such as Manufacturing Technician- Upstream, Downstream; Chemistry QC Technician; QA Documentation Coordinator; Environmental Health & Safety Technician; Facilities Technician. Companies that hire graduates for biomanufacturing include Genzyme, Biogen, and TKT/Shire Pharmaceuticals. Another biomanufacturing related program offered through BLCS is CityLab Academy, a nine month, postsecondary job skills and education program offering 12 free credits to accepted candidates. Started in 1992, CityLab Academy www.bu.edu/CityLabAcademy provides experiences in modern biotech and its commercial applications. It arranges internships at several medical centers, hospitals and biotech companies in the Boston area. Since 1999, 14 out of 40 graduates of City Lab Academy who found jobs in the biomedical field have worked or are currently working in biomanufacturing.

Students learn fundamentals of laboratory safety, use of lab equipment, record-keeping, data analysis, dilutions and titrations, weighing and measuring, laboratory terminology, scientific method, computer literacy, aseptic technique, media preparation, critical thinking, ethics, cell culture and electrophoresis. Graduates work in biomanufacturing as well as research laboratories. They obtain positions as research laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, quality control technicians, technical support technicians, purification technicians, process operators, cell culture technicians, bio-processing technicians, aseptic fill technicians, documentation specialists, media prep technicians, and technical sales representatives.

Established in 1990, Middlesex Community College's biotechnology program is one of the oldest in the country. Programs provide education and training in skills required for entry level employment as technicians in biomanufacturing. Conferring both Certificates and Associate Degrees (with opportunities to transfer to a four year program) averages of 35 to 40 graduates per year qualify for immediate employment.
Employers include: Genzyme (Framingham, Cambridge and Allston facilities), Wyeth BioPharm, Millipore, EMD/Lexigen and BiogenIdec. An Internship at a biotech company is required in the Certificate program. Hands-on lab work and on-site work experience result in consistently high placement rates. Graduates work at various jobs, including process development associates, manufacturing technicians (both upstream and downstream), facilities technicians, validation specialists, and quality control technicians. Articulation agreements are in place with high schools, such as Minuteman Biotech training, and four year universities, such as Boston University Metropolitan College.

The Minuteman Biotechnology Area has two programs, the Biotechnology Academy Program established in 1995 and the Adult Biomanufacturing Certificate Program which was established in 1989. Both programs utilize competency based hands-on learning by the students in a well equipped, industry-level equipment in a facility that includes a class 10,000 cleanroom. The high school program is a four year program that is one of the first established in the nation. It is a four years program that addresses both conceptual and laboratory based approaches to biotechnology. The adult program emphasizes skills that would be needed to gain entry level employment in the industry. Students in both areas receive a Certificate in Biomanufacturing upon completion of the required competencies.
Many of our high school students choose to attend college after graduation with over 80% of them continuing on in the sciences. An articulation agreement with Middlesex Community College allows them to apply their Minuteman Regional High School course credits towards an associated degree in the biotechnology area. Over 100 students have graduated from our high school program. Adult graduates numbering in the hundreds, have found employment in biomanufacturing companies in the greater Boston area in positions as Cell Culture, Downstream Processing, Media Preparation, and Quality Control technicians. Recent graduates have been placed in Genzyme Corporation (MA), Wyeth Corporation (MA), Transkaryotic Therapies (MA), Eisai Research Institute (MA), and Becton Dickinson (MA).

The rapid development of biomedical equipment technology, combined with the introduction of increasingly complex and vital biomedical equipment, has created a serious need for well-prepared technicians in hospitals and medical research centers. These technicians must understand this new technology and be capable of maintaining, calibrating, modifying, and adapting this equipment. Gateway's Biomedical Engineering Technology associate degree program will qualify students for these demanding careers. Growth in the biotechnology industry offers graduates of these program new opportunities as instrumentation calibration technicians for production, validation, and research equipment and instrumentation. Equipment manufacturers require the services of biomedical engineering technicians to assist in developing, manufacturing, testing, service, and technical sales of biomedical equipment. Graduates of Gateways program are also capable of dealing with most types of non-medical electronics.

The Associate in Science Program in Biotechnology is designed for students who wish to enter the field of scientific research or who wish to transfer to a four-year program in biology, chemistry or a related field. The program will provide students with skills and knowledge necessary to work in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or basic research fields. This program will also provide the majority of the freshman and sophomore level coursework required of biology majors at most four-year institutions. Students may be either full-time or part-time. This program is appropriate for the traditional or non-traditional student. Graduates of the program will able to find employment in a variety of research settings, including the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, private and university research laboratories and State run labs. In addition, graduates of this program are well prepared to continue their education in a biology related field immediately after graduation, or later in their careers.
The option in Forensic Science will prepare the student to transfer to a four-year degree program in Forensic Science. This program will provide the graduate with the majority or all the required courses for the first two years of a four-year degree program in Forensic Science. The emphasis of this program is in the science of forensics, emphasizing biology, chemistry and mathematics. In addition, selected coursework in Criminal Justice will provide the necessary introduction to criminal justice procedures. Completion of the requirements of an additional program “track” does not constitute a different degree.

Biological technicians work with biologists studying living organisms. Many assist scientists who conduct medical research-- helping to find a cure for cancer or AIDS, for example. Those who
work in pharmaceutical companies, help develop and manufacture medicinal and pharmaceutical preparations. Those working in the field of microbiology, generally work as lab assistants, and
studying living organisms and infectious agents. Biological technicians also analyze organic substances, such as blood, food, and drugs, and some examine evidence in a forensic science
laboratory. Biological technicians, working in biotechnology labs, use the knowledge and techniques gained from basic research by scientists, including gene splicing and recombinant DNA, and apply them in product development.

The Biotechnology A.S. program is designed to prepare students for transfer to a four-year college or university. The curriculum prepares the students primarily for advanced study in biotechnology, but is suitable for advanced study programs in biology or chemistry with an emphasis on issues associated with the biotechnology industry. In addition, the program is designed to enhance the students' understanding of the technology and processes utilized by the biopharmaceutical industry.
A graduate should be able to:
- collect, analyze and interpret scientific data, using established research and statistical methods.

Northampton Community College now offers an Applied Science degree in Biotechnology and two Specialized Diplomas in Biomanufacturing. The Specialized Diploma (SD) programs prepare entry-level operators by providing 14-18 credit hours of instruction which can be completed in less than 6 months. The 64-credit Biotechnology Applied Associate of Science (AAS) degree program prepares students to obtain positions as manufacturing or research technicians in biopharmaceuticals and other industries and requires two years of study.
The AAS program in Biotechnology at Northampton Community College provides students with the skills needed for success in various fields of biotechnology. Students completing the AAS degree graduate with a solid background in math and science along with excellent laboratory, communication and team-work skills to enhance their overall employability in today's competitive workplace. Those completing the AAS degree can also easily transfer their NCC credits into four-year academic institutions if they choose to pursue a bachelor of science (BS) degree in biotechnology, chemistry, genetic engineering or other related fields. NCC's Biotechnology Program is housed at the Monroe Campus in Tannersville, PA, but most of the coursework is also offered at NCC's Main Campus in Bethlehem, PA.
For a quicker entrée into the workplace, NCC with funding from a 3-year US Department of Labor Community-Based Job Training Grant, has developed two new specialized diplomas (SD's) in biomanufacturing. One of the new SD's is in Aseptic Processing and classes will be held in a new state-of-the-art (ISO Class 7) Cleanroom also funded by the US DOL CBJT grant. This new facility is currently being built on NCC's Main Campus so that classes can start there in the summer of 2008. The Automation Control in Biomanufacturing SD classes will be held in specialized electronic laboratories on NCC's Main Campus. Both of these programs were developed with significant input from representatives of biopharmaceutical and biomanufacturing firms in eastern PA to ensure enhanced industry employment opportunities in only 1-2 semesters of coursework. The new SD's prepare students for entry-level positions as operators and technicians in biomanufacturing and production facilities. While the PETRI Project is housed at the Main Campus of NCC in Bethlehem, many of the pre-requisite courses for both specialized diplomas are offered on the Monroe Campus as well.
For the last 4 years, NCC has also been increasing community awareness of the great career potential of biotechnology. Strong partnerships have been established with 8 regional school districts and 3 four-year institutions with funding from the PA Department of Community and Economic Development through a 2+2+2 Workforce Leadership Grant in biotechnology Over 1,000 secondary students have participated in programs and/or hands-on biotech labs in their classrooms or attended Biotechnology camps after school or in the summer. In-service programs on biotechnology have reached almost 100 secondary teachers. |

The Biotechnology program is a laboratory-oriented course that simulates the workplace environment and is focused on identified industry skill standards for the Biosciences. The program is taught by an instructor with a Ph.D. in genetics, post-doctoral training at MIT and Fox Chase Cancer Center, and supervisory experience at the Hospital of U Penn.
It integrates technical competency, employability skills, and related academic content to prepare students for entry-level occupations in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry. Students master core competencies in areas such as media prep, microbiology, and safety. Opportunities are then provided for specialized instruction in areas including fermentation, mammalian tissue culture, molecular biology and forensics.
Qualified students may participate in job shadowing or internships in local institutions as a capstone experience. Graduates of the program have chosen the typical option of pursuing post-secondary education at 2- and 4-year institutions, with scholarships to area schools including Penn State University.

The Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary program combining rigorous foundations in biology, chemistry, physics, and bioinformatics designed to prepare students for entry-level laboratory position in the pharmaceutical industry and academia, and placement into research-based graduate programs. This program places heavy emphasis on methodology through laboratory experiences that provides students with state-of-the-art biotechnology skills. Particular emphasis is placed on recombinant DNA, mammalian tissue culture, computational chemistry, genomics, and immunodetection techniques. The students will complete an internship at a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company or institution during the senior year where they will gain experience in a research laboratory or professional manufacturing environment. Students will also participate in a Senior Seminar course where a short thesis is written based on either laboratory-based or library-based research. Where possible, the work conducted in the student's internship will be the focus for the Senior Seminar course. As part of this course the student will also prepare a poster summarizing this research that will be presented at a professional public event during his or her senior year.
Job opportunities for students with biotechnology skills include advanced research in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, combinatorial chemistry and drug design, medicine, genomics, bioinformatics, proteomics, AIDS research, vaccine development, bioinformatics, proteomics, AIDS research, vaccine development, agricultural crop improvements, and conservation biology. Career opportunities in basic or applied research are among the strongest in science and biotechnology students qualify as entry-level scientists in the biotechnology industry. With continuing growth of scientific and medical research and the production of agricultural and medicinal products, there will be a growing demand for science technicians in positions on the cutting edge of industry innovation.

ESU's Biotechnology program, the first of its kind in the state, emphasizes broad fundamental skills of the interrelated disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics and computer information technology. The program develops leading-edge laboratory skills and provides opportunities for independent research and internships. ESU maintains state-of-the art equipment and facilities so that students are afforded hands-on training in many of the techniques used in industry, including:

Graduates of the four-year Biotechnology program have a firm academic foundation enabling them to enter the job market or pursue graduate study for more advanced career paths in specialty areas as environmental, medical, forensic, and agricultural biotechnology. Our graduating students have no difficulties to find employment in the Biotechnology /Pharmaceutical industry within the Northeastern PA, Philadelphia area and NJ. Employers of past graduates include Aventis Pasteur, Wyeth-Ayerst, Merck, Medarex, and GlaxoSmithKline. The employment rate of students after graduation is almost 100%. In addition students pursuing a PhD have been accepted to programs in top graduate schools such as Lehigh University, PA; John Hopkins University, MD; Roswell Cancer Research Center, Buffalo, N.Y; and Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA.

The B.S. Biotechnology program was created in response to the explosion in scientific discovery, which is affecting our society on many levels. Students receive professional training using state-of-the-art equipment. In addition to summer internship possibilities at local companies, students are encouraged to join our faculty members' research activities. Students can earn credit for such independent research as well. Graduates will be prepared to enter one of today's hottest industries
The M.S. Biotechnology program is comprised of two basic curriculum tracks, depending upon point of entry. Undergraduates (third year students or transfers) can elect for a 5 year B.S. to M.S. Biotechnology curriculum. Applicants who possess a B.S. or a B.A. in the life sciences enter the two-year M.S. track. The graduate component, essentially identical for both tracks, does not require a written thesis.
The Center for Natural and Health Sciences is equipped with five large laboratories, an environmental wet laboratory, a greenhouse, three computer laboratories, and a multimedia auditorium. The Biotechnology Teaching and Research Lab (which was funded by a grant from Sanofipasteur in Swiftwater, PA) contains all equipment needed for students to experience cutting-edge molecular biology and biotechnology methodologies, including gene cloning, gel electrophoresis, DNA analyses, and polymerase chain reaction DNA amplification. The department has also purchased a fluorescent microscope to augment our research programs.
The M.S. degree in the biotechnology program prepares students for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, health care, and many other science related fields. The professional science master's program is an interdisciplinary graduate degree that blends a science education with communication skills, management and business understanding, and analytical reasoning. A professional science master's degree in biotechnology is ideal for career advancement in midlevel and upper level technical business-management/research positions in industry and government sectors and for instructor positions in academia.

Point Park is a private, accredited liberal arts university that offers a four-year degree in Biotechnology, as well as a Capstone program for those who transfer from community college and would like to complete their bachelor degree. For students who have already earned a bachelor degree and would like to update their scientific credentials, Point Park University offers the opportunity for a 30 credit post-baccalaureate degree in Biotechnology. Courses such as Drug Discovery & Development, Genomics & Proteomics, and Emerging Life Science Technologies are taught in a specially designed laboratory that opened in February of 2006.
An emphasis on career-based education provides Point Park University students with excellent opportunities for hands-on, real-world experiences. For example, students in the B.S. Biotechnology program will benefit from our cross-disciplinary emphasis on Molecular Biology and Information Technology. The Biotechnology program is geared to prepare students for work in industry as well as future graduate programs. The city of Pittsburgh has more than 25 different biotechnology companies and premiere research universities located here, so the resources are abundant during the undergraduate period in terms of internships as well as after graduation. The downtown location of Point Park University turns out to be filled with opportunities to participate in the discoveries of biotechnology.
The BTEC program is growing from its initiation in 2004, and includes 20 students for 07-08. Biotechnology students have performed internships with the Drug Discovery Center at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and received employment offers resulting from their experience. Many of our students continue on to medical school, pharmacy school, or graduate school.

The Program in Biotechnology/Applied Molecular Technologies (BT) at Thomas Jefferson University offers BS, BS/MS, post- baccalaureate certificate, and MS degrees. All tracks are designed for students who have completed at least the first two years of their college course work elsewhere prior to matriculation. Hence, we are excellent venue for individuals desiring to transfer from community colleges. Students complete extensive hands on laboratory course work designed to give them proficiency in current molecular techniques utilized in a wide range of biotechnology fields; and includes in addition to the "standard molecular biology techniques", cell and tissue culture; protein expression, purification and characterization; molecular diagnostics; and mutation detection. The curriculum includes theoretical basic science course work, such as: cell biology, biochemistry, immunology, pathology, histology, flow cytometry, systems biology/bioinformatics, and microbial and human genetics. Course work in regulatory issues and ethics are also included. Students utilize state of the art equipment and are taught by experts in their respective fields, from both academia and industry. In the final phase of their training, students engage in practical rotations in various laboratory settings to gain first hand day-to-day experience in the laboratory environment. Students completing their degree will be able to hit the ground running and be prepared to begin graduate studies or independent careers as BS or MS level scientists. Graduates of our program have found employment in the pharmaceutical industry (Glaxo Smith-Kline, Merck, Johnson and Johnson, Centocor, Imugen), in molecular diagnostics, forensics, core facilities, academic labs, state/government laboratories and in teaching. Others have gone on to join doctoral and/or professional programs.

Courses within the program are designed to transfer to four-year institutions. Articulation agreements are currently being negotiated with four-year institutions. Biotechnology is concerned with the manipulation of biological systems to achieve a desired end product. The ability to construct recombinant DNA molecules, purify proteins, and create transgenic animals all fall within the field of biotechnology. Biotechnology has and will continue to revolutionize the fields of medicine, criminal justice, agriculture and environmental science, to name just a few. As great as the promise of biotechnology is for improving human well being, it also raises profound ethical questions.
The Biotechnology program at CCBC is designed to provide students with the technical skills and knowledge necessary for a rewarding career in the bioscience laboratory. The program core consists of three intensive laboratory courses, Biotechniques I (Nucleic Acids), Biotechniques II (Proteins), and Genetics Laboratory. Each laboratory introduces state-of-the-art techniques and allows the student to develop experience with those techniques. Laboratories are project-driven; meaning that techniques are introduced in the context of a laboratory project and that each student is expected to complete an individual project at the end of the course.
