THE GLOBAL BIOMANUFACTURING CURRICULUM
(Scroll down for Membership Information)

The Global Biomanufacturing Curriculum (GBC) of the Northeast Biomanufacturing Center and Collaborative (NBC2) is an attempt at creating a repository of biomanufacturing instructional materials and resources, based on the Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Industry Skill Standards published by the Northeast Biomanufacturing Collaborative in early 2005 (see www.biomanufacturing.org/publications.php), to support the development of the infrastructure for biomanufacturing education, training and the workforce in the Northeast, nation and globe. At this moment in time, the need for the growth and expansion of technician training programs to support the biomanufacturing sector of the biotechnology industry is immense. An indication of this need in the Northeast can be found at www.biomanufacturing.org/jobboard.php.

Seventy-five percent of personnel in a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility are technicians in ten jobs. One hundred thirty biopharmaceuticals are in commercial manufacture and 300 are in clinical trials at the present time and many of the earlier biopharmaceuticals are moving into generics so there is an effort to replace these biopharmaceuticals with new ones.

Locally, regionally, nationally and globally we need to scale-up the number of biotechnology programs with a biomanufacturing focus to support the explosive growth of the biomanufacturing sector of the biotechnology industry in the northeast and nation.

The NBC2, comprised of six Hubs in 12 northeastern states, is working with biomanufacturing companies in learning communities focused on curriculum and instructional materials development for ten targeted biomanufacturing jobs.

Since many of the companies partnering with the NBC2 are global companies we have decided to develop a Global Biomanufacturing Curriculum. The GBC can be accessed by members of the NBC2 (there are four categories of membership: educational members; educational-industry partnerships, student/technicians, and vendors).
