Portland Community College teams up with Genentech, Welch Allyn and bioscience companies to train future workers
The program is the brainchild of biotech giant Genentech as they finished construction on a Hillsboro plant in 2008. Genentech helped fund, staff and develop the bioscience classes to train potential workers, many of whom were laid off from Intel and other industries during the recession.
Josephine Pino, the chair of the Bioscience Technology Program, estimates more than 100 students graduated with certificates or associate's degrees and about 85 percent found employment at bioscience companies.
Dennis McNannay, executive director of the Oregon Bioscience Association, said PCC's program is part of a wider effort to align education with the increasing number of jobs in his industry. His association also offers professional development for existing workers, such as classes on new regulations
